Ruby – The Beat Keeps On!

Ruby, an 11-year-old Norwich terrier, was fainting now and then, plus showing primary respiratory disease symptoms. An ECG and cardiac ultrasound revealed mild cardiac structural changes and a fairly normal heart rhythm despitesome brief pauses that are normal for some dogs. A 24-hour Holter monitor revealed Ruby suffered much longer, abnormal heart rhythm pauses that corresponded with her fainting episodes. Because medicine to decrease the pauses proved ineffective, Ruby’s familydecided to have a pacemaker inserted to giveRuby a backup heart rhythm. We installed the pacemaker and discoveredRuby also needed upper airway surgery to correct laryngeal paralysis. The surgery went well, though complications required additional hospitalization over the next week. It was a trying time, but Ruby’s familygave her every chance at a happy life, and today she’sbreathing well and no longer fainting.
